Dig it, baby! Palm Springs

We’ve been swamped with work lately (which is a blessing!) and so we almost had to cancel this quick trip, but instead we were able to sneak away and spend one night in Palm Springs so we could attend the Palm Springs Modernism Week exhibit on Vintage Trailers.

The original plan was to bring Loretta and Bella with us, and spend a long weekend.  Due to our busy schedules, we ended up without the trailer or dog, and with only one night – but we made the most of it.

The drive is about 2.5 hours long, and midway we stopped in a town called Hemet to pick up a bathtub.  I think I mentioned in a previous post that we are preparing for a bathroom remodel, and Scout found a $400 brand new tub on the materials page on Craiglist for $100!  So, we swung by and picked it up – luckily having more than enough room in the back of our expedition.

We checked into the Viceroy Palm Springs, and instantly loved the trendy boutique feel.  My favorite is always poolside beds, and with 3 different pools on the property, there were plenty of spots to take a late afternoon nap.

We explored the town, walking in and out of cute shops, and we had appetizers and cocktails at a funky restaurant called Lulu Palm Springs, before heading back to our hotel room to rest and freshen up for a late night dinner.

Dinner was wonderful.  We splurged and dined at Le Vallauris, which is named best restaurant in Palm Springs year after year.  They have a gorgeous courtyard for outdoor dining, and the food and service are wonderful.  Scout loves French food, and we always seek it out for special occasions.  This special occasion really was that we were able to squeak out 24 hours to relax and be together, but we also seemed to celebrate Loretta, and how we are such good supporters of each other’s dreams.  It sounds corny, but it’s a real rush knowing that we are following through with our plans and making things happen.  We both know it’s a blessing and could end at any moment, but in the meantime, we think it’s something to celebrate.

Back at the hotel, there was a wedding reception happening in the garden outside our bedroom window.  It was fun to fall asleep to the sounds of happy people and embarrassing wedding dance music.  We felt much more relaxed already.

Sunday started with a tour of the Home Depot-sponsored Makeit Right C6 House, which is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath prefabricated home.  It was beautiful.  Scout and I are both very interested in prefabs, mainly due to their use of sustainable, recycled, and environmentally friendly materials.  (Did you know that a regular home construction site can generate more than 10 tons of waste, whereas a prefab home has less than 1 ton of waste since most of the materials left over are recycled and used in other prefab projects right there in the factory. ) We also love the style of these homes, and their modular format.  This one was just under $195K including the upgrades.  All you need is a spot to put it.

So far, you have probably noticed there are no pictures in this blog.  In our haste to leave, we forgot the camera.  And of course, when we arrived, both cells phone batteries were dead…therefore, no pictures.  (I hope you take a few moments to check out the links I've included.)  But we did make sure we were fully charged for the reason we came:  The Palm SpringsModernism Week Vintage Trailer Show.

This show was awesome!  It was $10 a ticket, and we got to tour at least 15 trailers.  Some were full of original materials, while others had been converted and decked out into hi-tech bachelor pads.

The Vintage Trailer Show

We could have taken pictures inside all the trailers, but it was hot outside and there were lines 15 people deep to get inside each one.  So, it was usually a quick in and out.  But we were able to spend a nice amount of time inside our favorite trailer, a 1963 Airstream Bambi, owned and designed by Kristiana Spaulding.  Kristiana is a jewelry maker, interior designer, and all around Airstream officianado.  Check out her lovely work at www.silvertrailer.com.

I just loved this trailer, and thought it would be the perfect getaway and creative space.  Although it has no kitchen or bathroom, Kristiana says that they make due just fine, and really enjoy traveling in it.  I can see why.
